The size of the allocation was determinedby the size of the state’s population.During the Revolutionary War, 27 infantry regiments were assigned to theConnecticut Line and PETER PLUMB was a private in the line as evidenced by thedocument offered here, signed by three Revolutionary War selectmen, two of whommade important contributions to the War’s effort.

PLUMBwas in the 7th Company in the Northern Department, led by GeneralPhilip Schuyler. Of George Washington’s generals, only Artemas Ward and CharlesLee ranked above Schuyler. Schuyler’s command was rife with controversy andHoratio Gates was ordered to replace him.
ELIJAHBACKUS was captain in the Norwich militia. He went to New London to defend hiscommunity as a result of many alarms of invasion. He was also a leading memberof the Committee of Safety, member of the Legislature. Backus owned The Backus Ironworks, whichproduced tires for wheels, plow irons, spindles, cranks for mills, sawmillsaws, farming tools and anchors. Directly and indirectly The Backus Iron workswas producing products that helped support patriot lives during the war.
