Vermont Place-Names

SwiftCoverLargeThe Stephen Greene Press first published Vermont Place-Names: Footprints of History over thirty years ago.

In his introduction to the second printing in 1996, Sam Hand, University of Vermont Professor Emeritus of History, describes the volume of ten thousand Vermont place-names as "addictive." He also says: "What distinguishes Swift's work from so many other fine reference works, however, is its readability."

Vermont Place-Names is the product of nearly twenty years of research. It is the single best source of information on the Green Mountain State's place-names and provides invaluable information on its early settlers and settlement patterns such as can be garnered from place-name entries, maps, and appendices listing the New Hampshire Grants, New York patents, Vermont charters, and a 1774 Massachusetts grant.

The author of this comprehensive work is the late Esther Munroe Swift, a sixth generation Vermonter who grew up in Montpelier. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Vermont, followed by studies in particular areas of librarianship and history at Columbia University, the University of Chicago and other academic institutions. A well-known historian and archivist, Esther was (among many other things) Librarian and Archivist for the Billings Farm & Museum in Woodstock and a regular contributor to scholarly and historical periodicals. She served on the Executive Committee for the University of Vermont's Center for Research on Vermont and for a number of years was a Lister and computer consultant for the town of Royalton. Esther left us in 2011, but her master work remains.

Virtual Vermont Internet Magazine is privileged to have the author's permission to use material from this important and authoritative research tool in its various Town Pages. For this we express our deep appreciation.
